      Haredi religious teaching claims that the Jewish people are bound by three oaths: (1) not to settle in Israel by using force or violence, (2) not to make war with other nations and (3) not to act as if the other nations of the world would persecute Israel.   Confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus have been soaring in ultra-Orthodox Jewish communities around the world, most of all in Brooklyn neighborhoods in New York City and in Israel. The Israeli city of Bnei Brak, east of Tel Aviv, has become an epicenter of COVID in the country, with some estimates that 40 percent of the city’s nearly , residents have been infected.

    The New York State Education Department will decide later this month about whether to start enforcing regulations in ultra-Orthodox (or Haredi) schools, regulations proposed in a prolonged public.   Gilad Malach, director of an Israel Democracy Institute program on the ultra-Orthodox, said Haredi men who serve in the army go on to work at rates comparable to the general population.

      All of these questions and more are addressed in a part series of podcasts on Israel, Jewish issues and topics related to the coronavirus pandemic.
